The Victorians popularised the storage footstool/ottoman in the 19th Century using it mainly for storing bed linen, laundry and the like, but they became a very popular, "must have" piece of furniture. In line with the fashion of the time they started to make them more decorative and many took on a different shape like a circle or octagon. Some even had places to hold plants or even a statue! Footstools are just as important in our homes today as they have ever been and no home should be without one.
The earliest appearance of a footstool seems to have been in ancient Egypt and was used more as a step than a stool, to help the Pharaohs climb onto their huge thrones. But they were not just the furnishings of the rich and powerful, nomadic traders also used small, lightweight boxes to carry around their wares which they also used as seating and the storage footstool or ottoman was born. Footstools can be simply decor but as functional units they really come into their own.
